Erwan Heusaff did an unusual version of the Pinoy favorite, Taho

Erwan Heusaff did an unusual version of the Pinoy favorite, Taho.

Every country has something different to offer. They take pride in certain people, things, places, and events, that can only be found in their land. Traditions and customs, wildlife diversity, culture, natural resources, tourist destinations, and many other aspects define the identity of a nation. One of the most important aspects that can define a country is its own unique cuisine and delicacy. Food is a basic need which is why it really plays a vital role in making an impression on people. Visiting another country would not be complete if you won’t be able to try their own local dishes and food items.

The Philippines is a home to a diverse gastronomic experience. Because of the long history of colonization, cultures from many different countries converged here and shaped the unique identity of Philippine cuisine. One of the most famous Filipino food items is the Taho. A majority of the Filipinos are familiar with this popular dessert. It is mostly composed of soft solid ingredients with its pudding-like consistency, but it is best enjoyed as a drink. It consists of three main items namely: tapioca balls, sugar syrup, and silken tofu. I am sure that everyone has a fond childhood memory of running outside to chase after a Taho vendor during mornings.

A video of Erwan Heusaff from years ago is resurfacing on the internet. It is making a buzz online because of the unconventional process that the famous Chef used to make the Pinoy all-time favorite dessert, Taho.

It was uncertain if Erwan is not familiar with the authentic Taho, or did he intentionally demonstrate his own personal take on the dessert. Social media users and even food critics found the famous Chef’s recipe odd. In the video, the Chef used tapioca balls that are a bit bigger than the usual, and some even noticed that what he used were undercooked. Another thing is that the sugar syrup that he made was rather watery, unlike the thicker version that the masses are used to. Lastly, the step that probably aroused a lot of intrigue from viewers, is that he used firm tofu instead of silken tofu.

Many social media users were reacting with how Erwan demonstrated how to make Taho. Some found his ways to be unconventional. There were viewers who were just imagining how this version would taste like, and yet they are already disgusted. A majority found the process that was demonstrated as odd because they are familiar with the regular one, and just cannot simply accept this particular style of making the famous dessert. There were also some who accepted the famous Chef’s personal take and thought that it is not bad to have it different from the usual.

Even if the video had mixed reactions, it still served its purpose of teaching people how to make a regular Taho. For those who were familiar with the right kind of ingredients that should have been used, at least the sequence of steps were shown. For those who are not familiar at all, they can choose to follow the video demonstration or maybe even do their own version of the dessert.
